An Amazon affiliate link is part of the Amazon Associates program that allows website and blog owners to direct people to specific products on Amazon. For that referral the website or blog owner gets paid a referral fee which is a percentage of the money spent on the site by the person you directed. The percentage earned depends on the type of products purchased. This fee is earned as a referral fee but does not cost the individual who clicks on the link any additional money.

On a personal note, I find it easier to take a referral fee from a large corporation than to ask individuals for money directly. So, the least invasive way to earn that money is to be an affiliate.
